何と言ってもこのバンドの魅力はシルキーヴォイスとして多くのミュージシャンからもリスペクトされている、スモーキーロビンソンの歌です。 Claudette Rogers Robinsonという紅一点の女性ボーカルも入れたコーラスを重視いたバンドです。ローリングストーンズもライブカバーしているGoing to a Go-Go、ビートルズもカバーしたYou've Really Got a Hold on Meなど名曲揃いです。ビートルズはこういった黒人ポップナンバーや女性歌うポップな曲をカバーすることによりストーンズとは違う優等生的なイメージを作っていました。
つまりはブリットポップの源流にはモータウンサウンドは深く関わっている訳です。トッドラングレンも愛するOoo Baby Babyも美しいコーラス曲です。ABCというバンドも歌の中でスモーキーの歌はヴァイオリンのようだと賞賛しています。又Tears of a Clownのよう名曲にはジャムが影響を受けています。ポールウェラーがスタイルカウンシルを作り上げる流れの中には、モータウンサウンドがキーワードとしてありました。誰からも愛される音楽でありながら、誰からもリスペクトされる音楽というのはそんなに多くありません。そんな音楽の幸福を備えていたSmokey Robinson & the Miracles。長いポップスの歴史の中でもひときわ輝いている存在です。
やはり黒人音楽の醍醐味はライブにあります。オーティスのステージパフォーマンスは相当熱いです。生前のそんな熱いライブが堪能出来るのがLive in Europeです。シングルでしか発売されていなかったヒット曲 I Can't Turn You Looseも聴けます。亡くなる3日前に録音されていた永遠の名曲The Dock of the Bayを中心にしたThe Dock of the Bayはベスト盤の装いです。それならばシングルのみのI Can't Turn You Looseも聴けるVery Best of Otis Reddingの方がいいかもしれません。サム＆デイヴばりのジャンプアップナンバーで、オーティスといえばこの曲というくらい彼のすべてがつまった名曲です。Goota! These Arms of Mineという3連バラードの名曲の他、カバー曲ではリトルリチャード、サムクックなどの曲を歌っており、此のファーストアルバムで既に自分の歌を確立しているところが凄いです。オーティスの存在によってサムクックも再評価されますが、逆にサムクックの存在が薄くなってしまった事は否めない事実でしょう。いつしか、リズム＆ブルースといえばオーティスレディングというイメージが定着するようになりました。

Gettin' Down to Itはジャズスタンダードナンバーも歌えるのだという、シンガーとしての技量を魅せつけた作品になっています。Soul on Topではオーケストラをバックにしたジャズスタンダードの作品ですが、かなりゴージャスなバックサウンドでもファンキーなジェイムスブラウンを楽しめます。

そこで、彼が考え出したドラムパターンを延々と刻み続けさせます。そこに印象的なベースラインが絡み、テンションが効いたギターカッティングをワンコードで鳴らせ続けます。そこにジェイムスブラウンがシャウトするように歌い出すのです。この新しい試みがファンクというジャンルの新しい音楽を生み出す事に鳴ったのです。その第一弾がPapa's Got a Brand New Bagなのです。それに続くCold Sweatもファンクの何たるかを伝える名曲です。16ビートの裏を絡ませる事で生まれる跳ねた感じが特徴と言えるでしょう。
そしてこの時期のもう一つの代表曲It's a Man's Man's Man's World も忘れてはなりません。ソウルバラードの名曲です。これもあるからジェイムスブラウンなのです。黒い、実に黒い音楽であります。現在は黒人音楽も一般的になりましたが、これほど強烈に黒い音楽を貴方は受け止められるでしょうか。これ故曽我本来のブラックミュージックなのであります。
このアルバムに至るまでの何枚かのアルバムは廃盤のようで見つけられなかったので、このアルバムを紹介します。ここに至までにはShout and Shimmy、Prisoner of Love、Grits and Soulなどがあり、ライブ盤も多くあり、その代表がLive at the Apolloです。Live at the Apolloはありましたが、またの機会に。
