スィングジャズで一番有名なのはグレンミラーでしょう。有名な曲がいっぱいあります。ミラーは白人向けのジャズを確立したとも言えます。グレンミラー楽団を有名にする為に、独自のアレンジで彼にしか創れないようなサウンドを創り出したのです。それは和音構築の際のボイシングの動きに特徴があります。その洗練されたアレンジは逆に黒人にも影響を与えていく事になります。

ビッグバンドといってもトランペットを何本用意するか、トロンボーンを何本用意するか、サックスを何本用意するかで印象ががらっと変わります。そういう編成でのアレンジの決断もバンドリーダーには必要です。グレンミラーのセンスはその点ずば抜けていました。このサウンドを編み出す為にかなりの試行錯誤をくり返しますが、その努力が実っていまだに聴き継がれる名曲を生み出しました。それを堪能するにはやはりベスト盤になります。

映画のスィングガールズでも多くの曲が取り扱われています。彼の活動時期はちょうど第二次世界大戦中で、戦地へ慰問演奏したりと国に貢献していたのですが、その帰りに爆撃にあい戦死したそうです。運命とは残酷なもので、その後すぐに戦争は終わりビバップの時代へと進んでいくのです。しかし彼が残した音楽はいつまでも人々の心に届き続けていく事でしょう。
