ずっと売れなかった時期を経て、ついにソロアルバムとしてリリースされたこの77年のアルバムでブレイクしました。Todd Rundgrenをプロデュースに迎えて制作されたこのアルバムはアメリカンハードロックとして世界的なヒットなり、現在まで3000枚以上の売り上げを誇っています。しかし、なぜか日本だけはさほど売れませんでした。あまりにもアメリカンドリーム的な内容が受けなかったのでしょうか。

ポップ感覚満載のTodd Rundgren のハードロック系のアレンジと、スプリングゥティーンのようなストリートロック的な歌で、アメリカでは絶大な人気を獲得、ジャケットがヘヴィメタ系なので誤解されがちですが、内容はポップなアメリカンロックであります。参加ミュージシャンはの他、Roger Powell、Edgar Winter などの他、デュエットでEllen Foleyとの掛け合いもポイントになっています。

You took the words right out of my mouth、Two Out of Three Ain't Bad"、Paradise by the Dashboard Light、Bat Out of Hellの4曲のシングルヒットを生み出し、ほとんど一発屋みたいに売れまくりました。ミートローフの名前は世界中に知れ渡り、日本でも知られるようになりましたが、アメリカほどの成功には至りませんでした。トッドファンにもコレクトして欲しいほどのポジティヴなポップ作品になっています。ミートローフは歌っているだけなので、仕組まれたアメリカンドリームみたいなうさんくささもありますが、そこはグラムロック的に楽しめればと思います。一応歴史的名盤です。
